چکیده

In recent highly variable climate, a combined effect of a large-scale northern hemisphere climate and regional-scale Adriatic hydroclimate changes significantly reflected in the Adriatic Sea ecosystem. To clarify this statement we set up in connection two inter-annual systems: the airsea interconnected system and pelagic ecosystems for the period 1961 to 2010. Within this period, significant changes occurred through 1987-1998 period, characterized by a drop of temperature, salinity and oxygen concentration in the middle Adriatic intermediate layer as consequence of a weaker ventilation of the Adriatic Sea. The pelagic ecosystem reacted to these changes. Large fluctuations in marine biota (from plankton to pelagic fish) revealed significantly different regimes before and after the late eighties. Different patterns observed through analyzed biotic parameters seem linked to modification in thermohaline circulation related to the Eastern Mediterranean Transient (EMT), whose effects prevented warmer and saltier water mass intrusions into the Adriatic Sea. These results provide evidence on connections between the shifts in the middle Adriatic pelagic ecosystem and the northern hemisphere climate via changes in regional atmospheric conditions, and highlight the importance of northern hemisphere climate changes for physical and biological regimes of the Adriatic Sea. Indications of Climate Regime shifts in the Middle Adriatic Sea

The Adriatic Sea, as adjacent sea of the greater Mediterranean Sea, is under direct influence of atmospheric processes and their variability. Cold deep water formed under strong winter outbursts of Bura wind in the Northern Adriatic plays crucial role in the overall Adriatic circulation. Interannual variability of temperature and salinity in the Adriatic Sea is firstly interplay of Northern Adr...

Decadal sea surface temperature variability in the subtropical South Pacific from 1726 to 1997 A.D.

We present a 271-year record of Sr/Ca variability in a coral from Rarotonga in the South Pacific gyre. Calibration with monthly sea surface temperature (SST) from satellite and ship measurements made in a grid measuring 1 degrees by 1 degrees over the period from 1981 to 1997 indicates that this Sr/Ca record is an excellent proxy for SST. Comparison with SST from ship measurements made since 19...

Remote climate forcing of decadal-scale regime shifts in Northwest Atlantic shelf ecosystems

Decadal-scale regime shifts in Northwest Atlantic shelf ecosystems can be remotely forced by climateassociated atmosphere–ocean interactions in the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean Basins. This remote climate forcing is mediated primarily by basinand hemispheric-scale changes in ocean circulation. We review and synthesize results from process-oriented field studies and retrospective analyses of ...

Regime shifts and red noise in the North Pacific

Regimes and regime shifts are potentially important concepts for understanding decadal variability in the physical system of the North Pacific because of the potential for an ecosystem to reorganize itself in response to such shifts. There are two prevalent senses in which these concepts are taken in the literature. The first is a formal definition and posits multiple stable states and rapid tr...

Climate change and decadal shifts in the phenology of larval fishes in the California Current ecosystem.

Climate change has prompted an earlier arrival of spring in numerous ecosystems. It is uncertain whether such changes are occurring in Eastern Boundary Current Upwelling ecosystems, because these regions are subject to natural decadal climate variability, and regional climate models predict seasonal delays in upwelling. To answer this question, the phenology of 43 species of larval fishes was i...
